Novice and Veteran--the answer

My current projects are running very slow, but I thought I’d share an older piece.

This is the follow up to “Novice and Veteran: [link]

When I was working on adding serious bruises and blood to my work, this was one of my test pics. It dates from early in Tara’s career as a pro, and she had a chance to take a fight when Stephanie’s opponent was injured in training. Despite Stephanie’s experience—and almost unbroken string of knockouts—she took the fight. As you can see, she paid a steep price, as the shorter, but heavier, woman completely demolished her. The fight was decided in the first round, but the knockout didn’t happen until the fifth, Tara absorbing a terrible pounding. (And what you can’t see, under that stained yellow top) is just as bad.)

Of all the fighters out there, Stephanie is the one Tara most wants a rematch with—not just for the loss, but the manner of the loss. Stephanie could have knocked her out in the second round, but chose to prolong it, smiling as she got a good workout on her redheaded heavy bag.

The rematch will happen…

(I know Steph’s top isn’t quite right—I might fix it. But for now, it was a case of no art posted for a bit yet, or sharing this oldie but, I think, goodie.)

Get up I'm not done with you

Here’s a view that almost all of Rose’s opponents are familiar with—looking up at her after she’s knocked you down. She can be sadistic; she loves the feel of landing punches, the look of pain on her opponent’s face. Even so, she is an honorable boxer—anyone from the gym that gets in the ring knows her little foibles, and chose to get in there anyway, so they shouldn’t have complaints about what they get. (Well, except when she’s in a money fight—then, anyone who shoes go get in reach of her fists can suffer whatever consequences she chooses to dish out, until the KO or TKO.) And if anyone manages to turn the tables on her, she wouldn’t resent it—want a rematch, but would accept the thrashing as part of the game. She’s a lot of things, including probably the best boxer in the gym, but no hypocrite. She also knows how to make punches hurt without doing much long term damage, once she’s got control of the fight.

She’s also a teacher, and knows when to keep her bad habits under control, like when sparring. It’s perfectly safe for even the youngest or smallest to spar with her for training. (In the morning hours, of course, when kids are around, the gym’s dress code is a bit different…)

Here, she’s totally disgusted with the fight her opponent gave her, and is challenging her to get back up and fight—or take more punishment, if she can’t fight.

Just a quick doodle, since I won’t be doing a fight with Rose in it until I get Tara vs Sam completed, and I like her. Rose vs Sam might be on the agenda—they’re similar in size, and both like to win a fight with pain rather than unconsciousness.

As I develop the personalities of the boxers here, I’ll post more about them, along with portraits and stats.

Been playing with Poser for a little while, inspired by such artists as Majorfan, hbenton, Yamazaki42, Drewhammond, Juxvam542, Ringer0, fab1rr, Tetsuo72, and others.

Thanks for posting a variety of boxing artwork...and to those who gave me advice when I was ready to punch the computer, special thanks!

I know this isn't great, but hopefully, progress will happen.

Boxing Demotivational

Having seen enough demotivational posters around, I thought I’d try one. A beating like Tara took could be a perfect argument against excessive stubbornness for some people. (And by this time she was too dazed to do much at all.)]

And Tara did keep getting up, and the results were the same--more punches, followed by an even bloodier redhead lying on the canvas.

What posters like this don’t show is how that same stubbornness can lead to a win.

Just a try for a bit of humor—I’m one of those people that, like Tara, will keep getting up. Sometimes, it means a pounding—sometimes it means a WIN!

05 Third Punch...OUCH

Red continues her relentless assualt on Sarah. Poor Sarah tried to counter Red's hook with her own left hook, but not fast enough, and Red smashed her in the jaw with a brutal right uppercut. The punch caught her clean, and Sarah's stagering back, stunned. If she doesn't do something fast, this is going to be a very short, humiliating fight.

Tara's enjoying her close up view of her long time rival getting pounded--and she's also intrigued by the big redheaded newcomer...

17 Scrap and Felicity

Scrap’s been taking a good pasting from Felicity, but she’s not really hurt yet—breathing hard due to having a blood-filled nose, but she still has LOTS of the energy and confidence of youth—and some good skill. The older (low 20’s) Felicity is just as energetic, and has the confidence of superior experience and skill.

Right at the start of the round, Felicity was carrying her right just a tiny bit low. Scrap saw the slight weakness in Felicity’s defense, and moved in with a very aggressive, stiff jab. Felicity’s low hand was no accident, but a trap; she slipped the jab, and BLASTED Scrap with her hardest punch, catching her clean…

HOW hard is Scrap’s chin?

Dirty fighting

A good friend I’ve known for a long time asked me for this pic, and I thought others might enjoy it, too. Sam has Sarah covering up, but Sarah’s guard is pretty good—so Sam digs a cruel shot under her guard, bringing on an intense, almost paralyzing pain. The boxers at Rose’s don’t fight dirty like that; Rose would throw them out if they did. But this time, Rose specifically told Sam to hit Sarah low, if she got a chance. Sarah’s going to be fighting a dirty fighter, and simply hasn’t learned to protect herself against the dirty tricks. Sam’s next punch will catch Sarah in the chin, separating her from her senses.

A quick doodle for a friend.

Opus 500: Fight Time at Rose's Place

Opus 500: Fight Time at Rose’s Place

Every so often, Rose holds a “Fight Time at Rose’s” event. It’s a time for gym members and the occasional special guest, to fight in a relaxed atmosphere no press, no publicity—just for the pure sport of it—and to challenge each other’s skill. They all end with either a knockout, someone giving in, or, on rare occasions, a stoppage—there’s no round limit.

The first fight was between Jackie and I; our faces clearly show the results of the fight—4 3 minute rounds of intense action before the bloody looser couldn’t beat the count.

Ever since Tara first started training at Rose’s, it’s been her ambition to beat her teacher up. And she’s tried repeatedly—each time taking a thrashing from her bigger, stronger—and far more experienced—teacher. But, this time, at Fight Time at Rose’s, Tara’s done it. After 7 brutal rounds, Tara’s done it. Her right hook to her dazed teacher has given her a nice halo of sweat and blood—naptime for Rose…

Tara is now the gym’s Open weight class champ, vacating her gym middleweight title. Several people will be interested in challenging for either the vacant title, or for Tara’s title. Jackie will certainly be interested in Tara’s new title—after taking the lightweight title from Scrap. (That shouldn’t be too hard…)

Of course, Liz and Sara also see Tara’s title as being up for grabs. Right now, Liz and Scrap have the best claims at a shot at Tara and her Openweight gym title, since they are, respectively, the gym heavyweight and lightweight champs.

Note: This pic has been in the works for some time, and has been one of the most challenging to do of all that I’ve shared. I hope it was worth the time and effort.

Winning Punch View One

Winning a fight with one punch...

I did this pic, and the next, as a combined image, but some prefer a single panel per image. It takes a look at both panels to really get a good idea of the reason the single punch was enough to set someone as good and big as Liz up for a pounding and knockout.

Evalyn lands her first punch against Liz—and wins the fight with it. She had to hit the taller woman with a lot more punches, but this one determined the outcome. Evalyn ducked under a jab, and took a risk; she took the extra split second to throw, not just a hard, painful punch, but one with every bit of her muscle and weight behind it—right into her opponent’s floating ribs. That, itself, from her, can drop a lot of people, but not Liz.

Note Evalyn’s left hand. At first glance, it looks like she’s trying to throw a second punch already, but she’s not. As she stepped inside Liz’s reach with the vicious right hook, she was also knocking Liz’s right glove outside of her left, exposing the biger woman’s jaw. As the right smashes Liz’s body, Evalyn’s weight is now on her front foot, perfectly positioned to drive a left hook into Liz’s jaw, temple, or eye. In this case, she got Liz full power in the jaw, leaving her momentarily stunned. That’s all it took for Evalyn to smash her a couple more times, keeping her off balance, seeing stars, and vulnerable. 10-20 full power punches later, Liz went down for the count. The fight perhaps lasted 30 seconds, and all Liz landed was one glancing jab on her opponent’s face.

Should I do more of this match?

Clowning around

Rose was working with Felicity and Maria, having them run through some light contact drills, making Maria work on her slipping and dodging, and Felicity working on getting inside. Working with a small, lightning fast boxer is good for the ponderous Maria’s speed, and Felicity, even though she’ll only get tapped very lightly at most, is very aware of the size and reach difference—a good training situation for both of them.

Of course, girls will play games—and this time, they posed for a funny picture. But, none of them can manage to keep a strait face.

Steph beating up Tara

At the request of Kat, quite a talented artist, [link] I’m putting up a pic that somehow fell between the cracks earlier, except when used for a background poster. A young, inexperienced Tara ended up in the ring with a bigger, stronger veteran, who saw her as a way to continue her undefeated streak relatively risk-free. Steph did exactly that, putting on a show of brutality, entertaining the audience, and enjoying herself. Tara’s spirit never wavered, but after enough hard punches, anyone will get knocked out.

One of Tara’s biggest ambitions is a rematch with the bullying Steph…

Chrissy vs Selene 08

The brief respite is over, and we eagerly close—both enjoying the challenge, though so far, Chrissy’s been getting the better of me. But after a brief exchange of punches, I see an opening, and lash out with a hard right. This time, I catch my smaller opponent clean; Chrissy knew I was strong, now she’s felt it.

It’s early yet, and she’s tough—the punch won’t knock her out—but perhaps it will slow her down some, or instill some caution in the pink haired woman that’s been beating me up…or perhaps not.

This One's Over

Shortly after Tara’s comments on Erika’s technique, ( [link] )the two got into the ring to prove their respective points. After six rounds, they found out which style worked better—and learned a LOT about the other woman. Erika hits even harder than Tara expected—and is quite good at landing punches; she dropped the redhead more than once, and (though Tara certainly won’t admit it) almost knocked her out.

Erika discovered that Tara’s speed, skill, and power were a tough mix, as the redhead danced in and out, popping stinging blows at all angles, absorbing some of Erika’s best punches, and frustrating her to no end.

This one’s over! But—Erika’s been humiliated by being destroyed by a smaller fighter; she’ll want a rematch. Am I nuts enough to face those fists again?

Erika belongs to [link] and is playing here with his permission.

A tribute to Jon AKA juxvma542

For a long time, Jon (Juxvma542) posted a good assortment of mixed boxing pics. He was unusual in emphasizing the women loosing, often badly—a counter to the fact that almost all mixed artwork involves one sided beatings for the guy.

This is my first attempt at doing a mixed pic since I got back to drawing.I hope, Jon, that you see and appreciate it.

And—everyone else, enjoy!

Finishing the Fight

Blaine and Evalyn have been pounding each other for a bit, and Ev’s size and strength advantage is considerable—as is her boxing skill. In a ring, the smaller brunette would get thrashed—but Blaine’s a seasoned brawler, and that’s been enough to offset Evalyn’s size and power. Unless Evalyn can manage something almost immediately, Blaine has this one won—and will formalize it by pounding the bigger woman until she either gives, or is OUT. OUCH!!!

An older pic that I realized I’d not posted—rl is too hectic to draw much recently.
