Naptime for Erika

$

Erika’s big, strong, and fast; she wrecks people in a hurry with brutal punches, and very few people even dare get in the ring with her—especially if they aren’t close to the same size.  But, she was looking for a fight, and I’d seen her on the bag—big, strong, fast—and with a poor defense.  So, I took her up on the offer when no one else would.  Six rounds later, the fight’s over.  She blasted me with some hard shots, and had me down a couple of times—but I’m no slouch, and despite being much smaller, managed to pich her apart and wear the big girl down.  Naptime for Erika…

I did this pic some time ago, and thought I'd share

The Calm before the Storm

I’ve met Erika for some good clean fun; we’re 1-1 boxing, and going to try something different this time…bareknuckle.  Here, we’re looking each other over—two good friends, both looking forwards to this—going to do our best to punch each other into submission.  All the bruising, blood—perhaps a busted nose—just to see who’s tougher—a fight for bragging rights, really…

What might each friend be saying and/or thinking?

Erika belongs to thornethedrifter.deviantart.co… and is playing here with his permission.
no violence warning on this one--but that's coming...

Winner and Loser

When a fighter expects to loose, she’s beaten before the first punch is thrown.

Here, an argument has been taken to the ring, and, within moments, we’ll be trying to beat the tar out of each other.  I knew Evalyn was big, but, with mere seconds before the punches start flying, I’ve abruptly become very aware of the size difference—not just the height, but the massive muscles she has; every punch she lands is going to hurt—a lot.  And, she’s good—at least as good and as fast as I am.

Her confident stare has thrown me off balance mentally, making me think of the raw power she can generate with that big, well toned body, imagining will happen when her fists crashed into my nose, my ribs—the raw pain that comes from taking her power punches clean in my face.  And those massive muscles—sexy as all get-out—but scary when she’s using them to drive those hard fists—encased in small 8 ounce gloves—into my body.  It’s obvious to me that this was a mistake, that she’s going to punch the crap out of me.  That glare is making me think of the ever increasing burning on my face as Evalyn contorts it with punch after punch—the deep pain from too many rib and belly punches, and the way I’ll look when she’s is done with me.  Getting in my face as she has is just part of her way of intimidating me, and it’s working; she’s won the fight right here.  She’s got me so focused on her advantages to fight well, to use the hit and move approach that works so well.  What’s more, she knows as well as I do that she’s got this won; it’s just a matter of formalizing it with her fists.

She can take her time, enjoy the match, and make it last if she wants to…and to make things worse, I know she likes to drag out a pounding—this is going to hurt—and hurt all the more because we’re fighting to a knockout.

Boxing: The Next Generation

Scrap and Little Liz (so-called because Liz is also the name of the tall lass refereeing) are supposed to be tap sparring—throwing fast, but very light punches to practice technique without the natural tensing up that happens when the punches hurt a lot.  It’s a great training method for relative novices, or even for more advanced boxers practicing new techniques.

These two aren’t wanting to keep things light, and have started winging harder punches at each other, despite constant warnings from Big Liz.  Scrap’s the worse culprit, but Liz certainly doesn’t deserve a halo here.

Liz is finally fed up, and letting them know it…it would take a brave lass not to pay attention in this situation.

Most of the time in the gym is spent on conditioning, working the bags, and controlled sparring—but often, the “controlled” part slips away after a few rounds.  Sometimes, the coach will let things continue that way, but other times, the light and controlled aspect is important.  That’s when we have no hesitation about trying new techniques, and getting familiar with other ways to stop punches, and deliver our own—without getting a short nap, or needing to get bloodstains off of our shirts, if we mess up.  Keeping control of a sparring session is the mark of a good coach…being able to lift both students off the ground at once can substitute for more verbal methods—and likely the two kids will learn that Liz means business.  Little Liz certainly will—but Scrap is a wee bit stubborn…or thick headed, she’s also been called.

This is another pic in the "Essence of Boxing" gallery, showing some of what a coach goes through.

Kids at Twilight

Not all boxing is nice and formal, in a ring.  Sometimes, it’s much more fr fun, in the backyard.  In this case, Dad has been teaching Scrap and her big brother the basics of the sweet science, and Scrap’s also started to train more formally, at Rose’s place.  And, like so many young teenagers, she’s full of herself, and thinks that she can thump her big brother.

In an improvised ring, in a New England town, she’s trying to show her brother what she’s got.  Sadly for the overconfident lass, knowing how to punch well doesn’t cover being able to STOP punches—neither kid has much in the way of defense.  That will come with time; it’s MUCH easier to learn to throw good punches than to learn to avoid them.  POW!!!!  Big Brother's left hook reaches farther than Scrap's jab, and is hitting her clean on her unprotected chin!  But, Scrap is a shortened form of her nickname, "Scrap Iron."  She's tough.

Mom and Dad will not be happy that they beat on each other with them not present--though they are glad the kids are fighting with rules...

Flirting

This is one of my older pics, but I like it.  Sarah, the blonde on the left, has just introduced Tara to her younger (but bigger!) sister Liz, and Tara’s already flirting with the tall girl.  Just a simple pic, but one that sets the scene for some I did later on.  Of course, someone's likel;y to get hurt at some point...and Sarah knows that Liz doesn't just like to beat her opponents up, but really make sure they're covered in bruises before she knocks them out.  Not only that, knowing both of them, Sarah also knows that, despite Tara being 5'6 and Liz being 6'6, at least one fight between them is inevitable...

(For a change, no "violence" tag is needed...)

Tara nails Liz

Tara and Liz are having their long awaited rematch, and Tara knows now (she should have known the first time) that Liz is too big and strong for her to beat by trading punches—and too tall for her to use her slight speed advantage to get inside before taking one of her brutally powerful rights clean in the face.  Last fight, Liz was unmarked, and Tara was a MESS, so Tara’s trying a different approach—raw pain.  A hard punch THERE—and Tara hits both fast and hard—HURTS.  But can she land enough there to give her a chance to win?

(I didn’t get the series complete before losing my previous computer, but some of the pics are, I hope, worth posing anyway.)

Valentine's Day Massacre

In celebration of Valentine’s Day, I do have a couple more pictures.  The Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre is well known—and this was a beating worthy of it. Liz dominated Tara, and could have finished her in the third or fourth round.  But, she didn’t; she took her time pummeling the smaller girl, finally knocking her out in the 7th.  Liz does like to lay on the hurt, and insure that her opponent never forgets the fight, and she accomplished that for sure!  She especially likes pounding faces, but has no hesitation to punch a hard stomach or firm chest.

Now the fight is over, and the two have the locker room to themselves, and they are talking about the fight, laughing…clearly, Tara doesn’t resent the brutal beating.  If things go further, this could be a fight they remember on Valentine’s Day, for more than just the pounding.  Massacre, and perhaps budding love?

About Boxing: Rose Holding Pads For Liz

Training

Most of the boxing pics we see are of rough, hard fights—and this is only natural, beating each other senseless is a big part of the game.  But hard punching is only a small part of the time spent at the gym and in the ring—this is a more common scene.

Here, Rose is training Scrap and Little Liz.  Rose is calling out punches, and Liz is snapping them into Rose’s glove.  That gives Rose a good chance to analyze Liz’s technique.  She’s bound to have some words with Liz about her defense—though there’s nothing wrong with the punch.  Meanwhile, Scrap waits for her turn.  Punch pad time is a very important part of training, and with a good coach, you make great progress FAST.  A lot of the time, classes involve working the pads with other students and competitors—and a boxer’s skill shows almost as much in how well she does holding pads.

Rose generally prefers to wear her own gloves instead of pads—smaller targets demand more precision from the students, and since she’s got gloves, she can tap her students if they leave an opening.  (Or tap more firmly in some cases…)

Clearly, Rose thinks these two have potential, or she wouldn’t be taking the time to hold pads for them, as other students would do just fine.

About Boxing: Ready for Backyard Fun

$

A lot of boxing isn’t done in gyms and stadiums, but for fun, in the back yard.  The goal isn’t necessarily to knock each other out, but to have fun, give and take some punches, and work off some tension—or just enjoy friendly competition.

More often than not, the only noticeable damage will be a bit of red cheeks, or perhaps a lucky punch gives someone a bloody nose, but three or four rounds in the backyard doesn’t really mess someone up too bad.  (A black eye or split lip is also par for the course, but not too common.)  The idea is to have fun, without the serious demolition that occasionally results in a more intense fight.  And bigger gloves are usually worn, 14 to 16 ounce, for the same reason.

It’s good clean fun, good practice, and doesn’t usually result in awkward questions in scholl or elsewhere.  (Like "Who beat you up?".)

Here, Evalyn is ready for some good fun; these might even be 18 ounce gloves—and her punches will still hurt good.  (Wouldn’t be any fun if the blows didn’t hurt..)

Don’t get a black eye…

This is another one of my "About Boxing" series, intended to look at different aspects of the game, from technique to emotions to whatever.

About Boxing: Uppercut to the jaw

$

Here's another pic in my "About Boxing" series.

We’re fighting hard, and my opponent’s found, or rather, made,  an opening.  The uppercut’s a great punch to throw in close, and comes in at an angle; some fighters find it very difficult to block.  She can get tremendous power behind the uppercut as well.

Here, she’s realized that I’m one of those fighters that’s not great at stopping uppercuts, and she’s worked hard to set up the punch—and POW!  In a flash, she snaps her powerful right arm up, passing cleanly between my arms and concentrating all her impressive power right on my chin.  This is the sort of punch that can really do some damage—sometimes even knock a gal out with one punch.  Other times, it can hurt her enough that she’s an easy target for more punches.

When I drew this pic, I was remembering getting hit with a shot like this.  In the actual fight, the blow knocked my head back, and did hurt me enough to slow me dawn, slightly dazed.  And that was all the advantage she needed; she pounded me good for the rest of the round, knocking me down once and giving me a bloody nose.  The following round, she resumed where she had left off, pounding me around the ring until the ref decided that I’d had enough.  I’ve got better at stopping uppercuts since then, but it’s still a weakness of mine—and it was also her best punch—a formula that almost guaranteed that I’d get beat up.

Boxing is always a learning experience, and if you can’t take getting punched out now and then, you’re in the wrong sport.

Please, let me know what you think...

Anne (the blonde) and I have met in the gym, after hours; the place is locked up tight.   We're about to have a good friendly fight--full out, but between friends, for the fun of it.  What are we saying here; what's Anne thinking about where my glove is?

Left and Right

I’ve seen people writing about boxing get left and right reversed when they are describing the actions and punches of the person across from the protagonist.  It’s easy to do, as, when we think of left or right, we think of our own left and right.  So, I’ve taken a couple of pictures I’ve done in the past and labeled them.  The first one is my POV, as Anne is sending me to the canvas with a hard left…OUCH!  (Fighting someone as big as Anne tends to be brutally painful for someone my size)

My dear friend Kathy, who I’ve known online for near 20 years, asked me to post some of her pics in my deviant art folder, that others may enjoy them.  This one here is of her ready to box.  She is a fantastic person and a wonderful artist and writer, and I’ve been honored and privileged to know her over these many years.

I would have loved to have met her irl, and swapped some leather, though the rsults might not have been good for this 5'6, 135 to 140 pound redhead)

 Enjoy!

Backyard toys

Not all boxing is in a nice formal ring—sometimes it’s for fun in the backyard.  These matches can be very light, for fun and training, up to and including as hard fought and bruising as in the gym.

I took this pic some years ago, just before some backyard mayhem—pretty high intensity mayhem, at that.  The red gloves are mine, the black ones were my friend’s.  I got VERY well acquainted with those sexy black Everlasts that fall afternoon.

Those are classic 8 ounce professional fight gloves—just the thing for sorting out who’s really tougher--get hit clean with these, and it HURTS!

Squaring off--View from the Hayloft

Some time ago, I drew a few bareknuckle fight pics, not all of which I posted.  In this one, someone is in the barn’s loft looking down—an interesting angle to view a fight from—and out of the way of flying fists, knees, and what have you.

Erika and I have decided to see just who is tougher—a good old fashioned fistfight.  I best be careful, the Valkyrie's BIG…

More of my fighting with her on my site and his…and more from my archives to come.

The size difference can be seen here: seleneboxer.deviantart.com/art… but speed and skill can overcome raw power and brutality…I hope <GULP!>

(Even though this is clean fun with a friend, this might hurt...)

Training the Next Generation

One of the many things boxers do is help train the kids.  Some will go on to become great boxers, some will get beat up good on a regular basis and leave the game, most will train for a few years and move on to other things.  Yet every one of them can take something good away with them, that will be with them for the rest of their lives.

The ones that do it for a little while and discover it’s not for them still have a greater understanding of what they can do—and have proved to themselves that they have the courage to risk a licking in the ring.  They have done something besides play with their electronic gadgets—they have worked hard; they know they can do things that others can’t.

Scrap and little Liz both like the workouts, the punching, the rush of trying to not get punched too hard or often; both want to get better at it.  Big Liz is doing what all the experienced boxers do at good gyms—helping the kids along.Big Liz sees a real firebrand in Scrap, and has a feeling the kid will go far—she’s got everything—speed, power, and most important, determination.  Right now, she gets hit much more than she should—but details like that can be worked on with time.  (As a result, she has proved that she can take a lot of punches and keep on fighting…)

Little Liz is still uncertain about how far she wants to go with boxing—it’s fun, but there’s many other things in life as well.  Only time will tell if she stays with it for years, or boxes for a while and moves on—but the life lessons she gets here, the confidence, will stick with her forever.

One big thing they al have taken to heart—you won’t know your limits unless you push them.  Sometimes the limits are expressed in the form of a beating from someone tougher than you expected…

That method of finding the limits HURTS, but doesn’t deter Scrap—the girl’s always ready to get in the ring and thrash anyone—or try to.  Liz is a bit more cautious—if the coach recommends that she not fight someone, she’ll listen—unlike Scrap, who sees it as a challenge.

Both teenagers have found something good here, and Big Liz (so called because there is a need to keep Big Liz and Little Liz separate when people are talking about them) is enjoying training the two of them—and right now, ready to help if Scrap’s bit off more than she can chew.  She let Scrap go with that weight to show her that there’s things she can’t do—but the kid’s doing it…

No matter what happens this day, all three will come out of the gym better than they went in; what more can anyone ask?

Note:  The next pic should have some serious punching in it, for those who are focused on that...after all, the goal is to beat up the other girl...)

Over time, I did a bunch of pics of Pumpmonger's Red pumpmonger.deviantart.com/ Some, I've posted, some, I haven't.  So, I'm going to post the miscellany of pics in a dedicated folder..this is the first one.  Red and I square off for some friendly sparring--hopefully, it'll stay light LOL
I started with this one to show how big Red is; at 5'6" tall, I'm not small, but Red makes me look tiny.

Fun times with Red

Red is a big, strong lass—and also very good at all sorts of mayhem.  To make things worse, she’s quite fast for her size.  One afternoon, we’d had enough of light sparring; we both wanted to test each other, find out what we had.  A private match, speed vs power, with the results only between us—this isn’t for bragging rights or money, it’s just clean fun.  It does looks like getting in the ring with her wasn’t the smartest thing in the world, though.  Between her reach, power, and skill, she’s pretty much wrecked me—but that won’t stop me from getting up—if I can.  (I want to at least leave a mark or two on her!)  She’s expecting me to get back up, also—anyone that gets that banged up and won’t give up, won’t stay down if she has any choice.  Foolish, but some people are stubborn.

(And the fight’s not quite as private as we realized…or we just chose to “not notice” the unofficial spectator…)

Red belongs to pumpmonger.deviantart.com/ and I have always enjoyed rendering his magnificent creation—wish she was real, and would walk into the gym.  (Though this is the likely result if she was real, and we tangled.)
