Between rounds, we’d both had time to contemplate how the fight’s been going…very badly for me; it’s in imminent danger of ceasing to be a fight, and becoming a beat-down, and we both know it.
Very often, a fighter that’s taken this much of a lopsided beating in the first round will be very timid and defensive—or wildly aggressive—right from the opening bell. Melissa’s used to both reactions. So, when the bell rings, and I moved out in the classic full out aggressive, end the fight NOW sort of attack, she was ready, slipping my haymaker left hook to counter with a short, cracking hook of her own. But—the wild attack was a fake to draw her out; I stopped abruptly, throwing a hard right at her face—every ounce of power and weight behind it. It’s landing exactly where I want it—right on that prominent nose of hers. I’m hoping to break it, but will be satisfied with it bleeding good.
The punch FEELS right—no telltale crunch that bespeaks a busted nose, but it should be bleeding very freely for the rest of the fight…now to capitalize, and keep the pressure on.
SURPRISE!
